It wasn’t my fault this time, Marvel didn’t put them up until either late last night or early this morning. So here are this weeks free comic books from Marvel! And what do you know, we get a couple Avengers related books to check out. Dark Reign: New Nation (Secret Warriors) #1 and Thor (1966) #337. Check them out at the links below. And remember, we’re still looking for a few writers that keep up on any of the Avengers comic books or characters related to the Avengers. So if you are a huge fan of Iron Man, for example, and you like to write we could use your help in keeping updated information on the Iron Man comic books.

BLACK PANTHER SAGA #1

DARK REIGN: NEW NATION (SECRET WARRIORS) #1

RUNAWAYS (2005) #25

SECRET WARS II #1

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #21

Secret Invasion: Requiem #1 Review

Tue, Dec 30, 2008

Happy Holidays everybody!  I know, it’s our very first review of, well, anything really.  Sorry it’s been so long for us to finally get one of these up, but I had to catch up on a lot of books and with the holidays it’s been pretty slow around here.  Since there are a multitude of things going on in the Marvel / Avengers universe, I felt it would be appropriate for our very first review to be on a book focusing on one of the founding members of The Avengers; Ant-Man.

A quick plot synopsis goes like this; Ant-Man (and others) examine some of the events that lead up to the tragic death of a central character.  It’s hard to say much more without giving away the death I just mentioned, but that really is the gist of it.  It’s a simple story that’s a good introduction to one of our main Avengers.

What’s really cool about this book is that it actually contains 2 other books.  Hank Pym’s (Ant-Man) reflections of past events are shown through these two books (Tales To Astonish #44 & The Avengers #213) which are pretty significant snapshots of Ant-Man’s crazy history.  We start with one of his very early stories showcasing his multiple powers and the origins of The Wasp.  The second gives us a glimpse at his stint as Yellowjacket, just one of the many identity crises Ant-Man has suffered from (I told you he had a rocky past).

The use of older books as flashbacks is typically frowned upon in other mediums, but it serves it’s purpose well here.  Think of it as a clip show; ie The Seinfeld finale, but good.  If you are new to The Avengers or looking for a quick refresher on a main character, this is a perfect place to start.

Until I can think of a better rating system (suggestions people!), I’m gonna use the ‘ole “…out of 10″ system for our first review.  I hope to roll out more reviews over the next few weeks, but try and bare with me, I still have some catching up to do.

These reviews will also get longer (promise).

8 out of 10

This Week In Dark Reign

Tue, Dec 23, 2008

This week brings us three more Dark Reign focused books; New Avengers #48, Ms. Marvel #34, & Secret Invasion: Requiem #1.  I’ve actually picked up every issue dealing with this story right now and am really into it.  I tried to get into Final Crisis when (DC’s big event right now) it launched and it didn’t really grab me.  I’m in no way bashing DC because we’re a Marvel focused site (they put out a great product), but it was just a lot of hype with dissapointing results.  I know i’m being extremely vague, but that’s only because I don’t want to spoil anything in these stories and everybody should see them unfold before their own eyes.  If you are currently keeping up with thesebooks, head on over to the forum and give us your feedback.

Tim Robbins = Howard Stark?

Thu, Dec 18, 2008

It appears as if there is a rumor going around that Tim Robbins is being looked at to play Tony Starks father, Howard Stark, in Iron Man 2.

Tim Robbins is going to be playing Howard Stark in an important flashback sequence that is going to set up the Avengers and Captain America films.  Jon [Favreau] wanted to get a good actor because he didn’t think the guy who played Howard in the last film could carry such an important scene.

Another actor by the name of Gerard Sanders played Tony’s father in a quick montage in the first film, but they obviously want to go with a big name for the sequel.  This is more good news on the Iron Man 2 front because, well…who doesn’t like Tim Robbins?  This makes sense since Robbins played the father in Zathura (also directed by Jon Favreau).  Head over to Latino Review to find out about two other major characters from the Marvel universe apparently making important appearnces in Iron Man 2.
