Captain America’s Suit

Mon, Feb 8, 2010

As predicted, while out promoting his upcoming film “The Wolfman”, director Joe Johnston revealed some things about his next project, “The First Avenger: Captain America”.  Here we have him talking about what we can expect the Captain to look like in the film.  The suits origins start off when Steve Rogers is forced to appear in USO performances, since the government is afraid of losing him in battle.

So he’s up on stage doing songs and dances with chorus girls and he can’t wait to get out and really fight. When he does go AWOL, he covers up the suit but then, after a few things happen, he realizes that this uniform allows him to lead. By then, he’s become a star in the public mind and a symbol. The guys get behind him because he embodies something special.

In the first USO sequences, the frustrated patriot will be wearing a version that is closer to the classic Jack Kirby-designed costume, but then later as the super-soldier hits the war zone he will be wearing a sturdier, more muted version that he makes himself that is more like battle togs. The stripes across his mid-section, for instance, will be straps, not colored fabric.

This is an interesting take on the origin story, but it’s good to see that the suit will remain faithful to the books.  Another interesting thing to not from this article is that the director states that he has to have an actor locked into the role by March 1st, so we should be hearing about that very soon.

Robert Downey Jr. Filming Thor Cameo?

Tue, Jan 19, 2010

For anybody watching The Golden Globes on Sunday night, you may have noticed Robert Downey Jr. sporting his Tony Stark facial hair.  Websites that got to interview him over the last couple months have said that he wasn’t sporting that hair after his initial shoot on Iron Man 2.  What this regrowth has done has gotten people speculating two things.  First, that he may be going back for some re-shoots on Iron Man 2, which is very likely since that happens all the time on films.  The second theory is that he may be preparing to shoot a cameo as Tony Stark in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, which just started shooting last week.  Since RDJ made his brief appearance in The Incredible Hulk, we know he isn’t against the crossover cameo.  Obviously both of these situations are very possible, but of course everybody is hoping for the Thor cameo to continue the build up to The Avengers.  What are your thoughts?

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye?

Sun, Jan 17, 2010

I know there have been some rumors going around about Hawkeye making an appearance in Iron Man 2, but no actor was officially signed on to play him, but IMDB is listing Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) as playing the character. Now I know IMDB is not always 100% reliable and it’s just a rumor, but it looks like we failed to post this information in the past so I thought I’d play catch up. I don’t know much about this character so would this be a good casting choice?

Captain America Director Speaks

Thu, Jan 14, 2010

Director Joe Johnston sat down with BoxOffice Magazine to talk about his upcoming remake of The Wolfman, but talked a little bit about tackling The First Avengers, Captain America.

“It’s not going to be a Captain America that you expect. It’s something different. It is influenced by the comic book, but it goes off in a completely different direction. It’s the origin story of Captain America. It’s mostly period—there are modern, present-day bookends on it—but it’s basically the story of how Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. The great thing about Captain America is he’s a super hero without any super powers. Which is why this story, among the hundreds of super hero stories, appealed to me the most. He can’t fly, he can’t see through walls, he can’t do any of that stuff. He’s an every man who’s been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen—the pinnacle of human perfection. How does that affect him? What does that mean for him emotionally and psychologically?”
