Captain America 2 Villain Crossbones Cast

Actor Frank Grillo (The Grey, Warrior), has been cast as Captain America villain Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  This was confirmed via the actor’s twitter account the other day.

The character of Crossbones typically works for Red Skull, but it’s not clear yet if that character will return in the sequel.  It’s always fun to speculate what a character will look like when he’s adapted to film, but based on the first films toy line, we may not have to guess.

Current speculation is that The Winter Soldier will tell the story of Bucky Barnes return, someone that we thought had died in the first Captain America film.  In the comics, he was also thought to be dead after the failed pursuit of a drone plane in London.

After the plane explodes, General Vasily Karpov and the crew of a Russian patrol submarine find Bucky’s cold-preserved body, minus one arm. Bucky is revived in Moscow, but suffers brain damage with amnesia as a result of the explosion. Scientists attach a bionic arm, upgrading it as technology improves.

He’s then programmed by the Soviet Union to be an assassin under the code name The Winter Soldier.  This is clearly different from the first film as we saw him fall to his “death” after a weapons blast knocks him out of a train and off a cliff into what appears to be a frozen river.  Unless the sequel is drastically changing The Winter Soldier storyline and giving the codename to a different character, fans may have a problem with that.
