Captain America Sequel (The Winter Soldier) Casting News

A whole new slew of casting rumors have popped up for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  First up is Mary Elizabeth Winstead.  You may know her from Scott Pilgrim and The prequal/remake of The Thing.  The rumor is that she is the main candidate for Sharon Carter, niece of the first film’s Peggy Carter (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent 13).  I’m sure this would make her the main female lead / love interest as she was Captain America’s girlfriend in the comics.  From Wikipedia;

In original continuity, Sharon was said to be the younger sister of Peggy Carter, the wartime love interest of Captain America, but she was later retconned as Peggy’s niece because of the unaging nature of comic book characters.

I like Winstead alot and had a huge crush on her in Scott Pilgrim, so I’m pretty excited to see her joining the Marvel Movie Universe.  Apparently she is ”the person Marvel has the most traction with right now”.  So we’ll see how that turns out.  As for the rest of the rumors;

Josh Holloway (Lost), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones), and Kevin Durand (Resident Evil: Retribution, also Lost) are all reportedly up for roles in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

This is very interesting news particularly because we reported that Josh Holloway was up for a role in a Marvel film back in May, 2010 (original story).  What happened after that was a backlash from some other niche websites and people saying that we were making up stories to get other sites to write about them.  We addressed those accusations in a post here.  This could all be a coincidence that he’s back in the rumor mill, but it could also mean that Marvel’s been interested in him for a while.  Either way, I’m glad that he may pop up in these films.  It’s assumed that the role they’re looking to fill is either a villain or a new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, yet to be confirmed, since both The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are already cast.
