We’re a little late to the draw with this one, but this is definitley the biggest Avengers news item to come out since the release of the film. Officially announced yesterday, Joss Whedon will write and direct the sequel to The Avengers!
Marvel Studios has weighed in with a statement that confirms the 2015 release date that Deadline had heard about the sequel to The Avengers. “Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
This is absolutely fantastic news. Much like the beloved Christopher Nolan Batman franchise, The Avengers will now have consistency as it’s main driving force. The Avengers was a huge success on many different levels and to have the same creative team in tact going into the sequel will only continue that trend. This probably means that Whedon will help to inform that continuity with the upcoming Captain America: Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man, and Guardians of The Galaxy.
