Thor and Captain America Will Be Converted to 3D

If you’re like me you probably read that title and thought to yourself, great, another shitty conversion to 3D, but then you went down a little bit and were like, sweet a new picture from Thor, but then you were again reminded that it will be converted to 3D. I’m sorry if there are some of you out there that like the 3D fad that has been sweeping Hollywood, but seriously it’s crap. Ok, let me rephrase that a bit, the 3D conversions are crap, but that’s pretty much every 3D movie that has come out since Avatar. Avatar was the only movie that was truly shot using 3D technology where as all these other movies were shot normally and then converted to 3D after the fact. Honestly the only other movie I know of in production that is being shot using 3D technology is the latest installment in the SAW series, but it seems like a waste in that case.

Now that I’ve gotten my thoughts on 3D out in the open, lets talk about Thor and Captain America. According to Hero Complex, it will be announced at Comic-Con next week that these 2 films will be coming out in 3D. Kenneth Branagh says that he did make some changes to the way some scenes were shot to maximize the 3D effect, but it doesn’t appear that he used any 3D cameras to shoot any of the scenes in Thor. On the other hand, Joe Johnston says that he did experiment with the 3D cameras for a little while, but they were just too bulky to be practical for what they needed.

Johnston did a one-day test shooting with a 3-D rig — as opposed to shooting in 3-D and converting — and said it was “a nightmare” due to bulky gear, calibration issues and restricted filmmaking options. He said he’s a firm believer, though, in the conversion approach if done right and he’s enthused to move forward. “It’s a new challenge and it’s exciting,” Johnston said.

So as Hero Complex states, the movies do rely heavily on CGI and special effects, so those scenes that are totally created in the computers or on green screens will probably look “ok” in 3D, but I’m still not a huge fan of the conversion process and taking every single movie that comes out and making it 3D. The directors do go on to say that the concept of 3D has been in place for these movies since pre-production so at least they didn’t finish the movie thinking it would be 2D and then have the studio come up and say that they were just going to convert what they had to 3D. So hopefully that thought process helps in the final outcome, but I will personally not be seeing it in 3D, sorry.

What do you guys think of 3D in movies these days? Do you like the trend? Does the 3D actually look “good” to you? I know there have been rush jobs like “Clash of the Titans”, but what about films like “Avatar”, was that any better for you? I’m actually really curious how other people feel about this trend.
