What Happened To Wolverine’s Claws Between Movies?

I kind of touched upon this issue in my review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine that’s posted below, but I wanted to show screenshots of what I’m talking about (if you’ve seen the movie I’m sure you noticed it). For some reason the CG on Wolverine’s claws looks terrible in the new movie and I’m not sure why. It could be because more of this movie took place outside in the daylight and it reflects differently off the blades, but there are also a bunch of scenes indoors and in a darker environment where the claws just look bad compared to what I remembered from X3: The Last Stand.

I took some screenshots of both X3 and Wolverine and posted them after the jump (I wish I could have gotten a little better shots from X3), obviously the daylight scenes look different than the scenes from X3, but even using the daylight as an excuse they look like there’s no texture to them at all. Is this just because they are brand new and maybe not worn in yet? I don’t know, I really don’t. Maybe it’s just me finding something small to bitch about, but I know I’m not the only one that noticed because 2 of my friends commented on the same thing. I would have posted screenshots from X-Men and X2 as well, but I couldn’t find a decent HD trailer to pull from. So you be the judge, based on the screenshots I pulled from the trailer (which are exactly how they looked in the final film) what do you think? Do they look significantly worse or am I just being fooled by the lighting?

His claws looked terrible in the new movie (unfortunately for me, they were not the worst part of the movie either). I dont understand why they would cheap out on something that is so important to his over all look.

The claws look completely unfinished. When I saw him cut the sink apart in the elderly couples house I literally cringed at how bad they looked. I felt like I was watching that unfinished leaked copy that the media was raving about when I saw this in the theatre. This movie was a disgrace to the comic book characters. FOX is Evil.

    Rest in peace Deadpool

FOX = The enemy of all Comic Book Fans!

The reason they look worse in X men origins is because in the x men trilogy the claws are actually real most of the time. Hugh Jackman had a wearable set of claws but they didn’t make any for X men origins: wolverine because it was cheaper to do it with CGI.

I can see in some cases it being cheaper to use CGI instead of practical effects for a movie, but in this case that seems weird to me. How much could it really cost to make a couple dozen sets of claws for the movie? Obviously they wouldn’t be real metal, but at least they would have the texture and look of real claws. I think it would be cheaper to go the practical way than to have someone (or a team of someones) going through frame by frame and inserting CG claws into all the scenes that require them. Sure you could still go in after the practical claws were shot and spice them up a bit, but I just don’t see the money factor being an issue here….

i almost laughed out loud when the helicopter blew up, then blew up again, then one more time…

The claws in the new movie looks alright to me, only a few shots of the claws look terrible and fake, like the third and fourth screenshot above. I’m thinkin’ pherheps it was the part of the leaked version and the special effects team forgotten to do it? Or is there another reason? I don’t know man, tell me if you know.

Is it just me or….the CGI claws not only look remarcably fake in comparison but in a lot of the scenes probably most of them look noticably longer than the attachable claws hugh wears what sort of a major bum fail is that lets not mention the fact that cyclops’s eyebeams were infact made to appear as laser beams leaving the walls burnt and when in the lore of the charachter it specificly states ENERGY kinetic energy beams!!!!! fail……major fail..

i literally just watched the old people bathroom scene and had to google to see if i was the only one that thought the claws looked like they should be in a tom and jerry cartoon. glad im not alone in my principles.

Nick I’m the exact same as you!
I honestly was astonished by the fake CGI and had to see if I was going mad!!

  12. geeze says:

I thought the claws looked fine in the movie. But then again I don’t watch it in slow motion trying to pick out flaws either.

  13. Tom says:

You definitely did not have to watch it in slow motion to see that the CGI on the claws looked absolutely terrible.

  14. Symbiote says:

If you need an in-universe explanation, Magneto bent them outwards in X-Men 1.

Took me a couple of times to notice. But yeah, they looked terrible.

  18. sad.claws says:

Yes, I’m sorry to say I don’t even know what the hell CGI is but that scene when he examined his claws in the bathroom, was utterly terrible.

No, Hugh, we couldn’t see those claws either.
