Watchmen Dispute Settled

From time to time we’ll post about something non Avengers news related, but still related to comic books and comic book movies if we think it’s big enough news.  This is one of those posts.  Fox and Warner Bros. have finally reached an agreement that will not prevent the film from meeting it’s March 6th release date.  Phew, that was close.  For anybody not following the story, Fox owned the rights to The Watchmen property for quite some time and basically decided not to move forward with production deeming the graphic novel unfilmable.   Warner Bros. didn’t feel the same way and the result is the ridiculously sweet and faithful looking movie we’ve been hearing about for months and months.  That’s of course my own quick rundown of what took place, but there are alot more details, but what’s important is that the film is still coming out as intedend.  Of course, everybody is assuming that Fox made out big time and probably recieved a large sum of money but that’s all specualtion at this point.  Either way, my excitement remains intact for March 6th, as should yours.

Update:

From The Los Angeles Times:

Fox, on the other hand, will emerge with an upfront cash payment that sources pegged between $5 million and $10 million, covering reimbursement of $1.4 million the studio invested in development fees, and also millions of dollars in legal fees incurred during the case.

More importantly, Fox will get a gross participation in “Watchmen” that scales between 5% and 8.5%, depending on the film’s worldwide revenues. Fox also participates as a gross player in any sequels and spinoffs, sources said.

I guess it could have been worse, but still sucks how this went down.  It’s like a little kid crying about another kid taking his toy after he didn’t want it…lame.
